Creand Asset Management kicks off a new tech venture capital fund advised by Blue Opal Capital

  • • The fund is to invest primarily in a selection of between eight and 10 funds from emerging venture capital managers in the United States while rounding off this strategy with stakes in fund management firms
  • The fund bolsters Creand Asset Management’s strategy of delivering distinctive, specialised products.

Creand Asset Management, the Creand group’s asset manager in Spain, has kicked off Blue Opal Capital American Technology VC, a new venture capital fund which will enable investors to access the US venture capital ecosystem with the help of the advisory services of Blue Opal Capital, a firm specialising in the selection of managers for this asset class.

The vehicle has been rolled out with a fundraising target of €25 million and an initial term of seven years, extendable for two further one-year periods. The standard minimum investment will be €100,000, although some investors may put up as little as €50,000 when they receive bespoke financial advice and meet the conditions set out in the regulations.

“This option adds to our alternative investment range with a highly specialised product furnishing unique value while bringing investors a fresh opportunity in the US market,” says Luis Buceta, Managing Director of Business and Investments at Creand Asset Management. “We’re doing this with the backing of a highly experienced team which can access a segment where picking the right fund managers is especially critical.”

A strategy targeting emerging fund managers

Blue Opal Capital American Technology VC will primarily invest in a carefully selected portfolio made up of between eight and 10 venture capital funds managed by emerging US firms specialising in tech start-ups or early-stage companies with a multi-sector approach.

The strategy will be completed with the acquisition of GP stakes in three or four fund management companies. This kind of investment enables investors to supplement their exposure to the companies in which the funds hold an interest by sharing in the growth of the fund managers themselves, thereby aligning long-term interests and diversifying sources of value creation.

The fund will seek to replicate the BOC Ventures Fund III strategy and build on the programme put in place by Blue Opal Capital to identify and support venture capital managers from the earliest stages of their development.

Established in 2019, Blue Opal Capital has offices in New York, Miami and Abu Dhabi and manages some $540 million in assets. Its founding partners previously worked together at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), and since 2005 the team has committed around $2 billion to venture capital funds. The firm’s senior partners have over twenty years of experience in institutional venture capital investment analysis and selection.

This launch sees Creand Asset Management continue to bolster its alternative investment portfolio with specialised, high value-added solutions designed to allow its customers to seize standout opportunities with the potential to generate long-term value.

The Blue Opal Capital American Technology VC prospectus is available on the Creand Wealth Management website (www.creand.es).
