In an increasingly connected world, talking about technology goes far beyond concepts such as innovation, immediacy, or convenience. It also means opening our eyes to the impact generated by our digital habits<\/strong>, which are increasingly frequent, more intense, and almost more essential.<\/p>\n

Our reality, as individuals and members of the community, is closely tied to the operational functioning of technological platforms: administrative procedures, banking transactions, saying \u2018<\/span>good morning\u2019<\/span> to the family, showing off photos of our latest holiday destination, or resolving all manner of questions thanks to artificial intelligence… And this reality has consequences not only for people and how society is organised, but also from an environmental standpoint.<\/p>\n

As we said, digitalisation has transformed the way we work, consume, study, and interact. However, behind it all lies a real impact: data centres that consume energy, electronic devices that require increasingly sought-after natural resources \u2014 rare earth metals anyone? \u2014 platforms that promote the consumption of everything, algorithmic systems that can alter our decision-making ability. Therefore, the challenge is no longer to digitise more, but to digitise better<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And this is precisely what the responsible and sustainable digital concept<\/strong> sets out to achieve: efficiently, ethically, and consciously using technology to lessen its negative effects and enhance its collective benefits.<\/p>\n

Responsible digitisation means having a vision focused on improvement: the environmental, social, and economic footprint of information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout their life cycle must be reduced. This translates, for example, into considering how much energy devices consume, how much water large data servers require, or how electronic waste is managed. From this perspective, digital responsibility involves managing the environmental impacts it causes (known as green IT<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, technological and digital services must also be accessible<\/strong>, so that anyone can use them regardless of their age, abilities, or place of residence; they must be ethical<\/strong>, with principles and values that put the citizen at the centre, and safeguard the security<\/strong> of users, in terms of privacy, protection, and transparency (IT for green<\/em>).<\/p>\n

It is this dual perspective that we citizens, institutions, and companies have to learn to enjoy and foster, and demand a healthier relationship with technology, bearing in mind that responsible digitalisation is built on a five-pillar strategy:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • limiting the excessive consumption<\/strong> of natural resources (mainly energy and water) and minimising<\/strong> the generation of waste<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • ensuring it is inclusive<\/strong>, accessible<\/strong>, and financially sustainable. That means, useful, usable, and used.<\/li>\n
  • introducing the ethical<\/strong> component, with regulation and legal protections for the user.<\/li>\n
  • ensuring the resilience and continuity<\/strong> of services.<\/li>\n
  • promoting new behaviours<\/strong> and values<\/strong> in the face of risks such as cyberbullying or misinformation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Digital responsibility thus calls for a more general and holistic approach that seeks to embrace three dimensions: creating<\/strong> economic, social, and environmental value; reducing<\/strong> the economic, social, and environmental impact of digitalisation; and leveraging<\/strong> technology for the economic, social, and environmental improvement of digitalisation processes.<\/p>\n
